If you missed Winefest at St. Michaels last weekend, don’t fret, there are still plenty of chances to head to St. Michaels this spring and summer while enjoying your relaxing weekend getaway at the Combsberry Inn. Up next on the horizon is the return of the Model Skipjack Races at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum!
The radio-controlled sailing races are organized by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Model Sailing Club, which meets regularly throughout the year to design, build, and race the model skipjacks. Sail-powered skipjacks were once the most effective working boat for oyster dredging on the Eastern Shore, carrying a deep history in in the historic, waterfront town of St. Michaels. Today, only a few remaining skipjacks can be found in the Chesapeake Bay. The radio-controlled model skipjacks are built from scratch (plans for the models are available for purchase in the Museum Store) and are typically 48-inches in length. The first model skipjack race will be held on Sunday, May 15 beginning at 11am. Subsequent race dates include June 12, July 17, August 21, and October 16. The public is invited to watch the races from 11am until 2pm at the museum’s Fogg’s Cove waterfront.
Located on the water in St. Michaels just a short drive from the Combsberry Inn, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class maritime museum dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment, and people of the entire Chesapeake Bay. More than 70,000 guests visit the museum each year, including many of our guests of the Combsberry Inn.
