Just across the way from our Oxford-based Inn is Tilghman Island, yet another picturesque bayside town ready to be discovered! On September 17th, the island welcomes incredible athletes to Phillips Wharf for the Tri Tilghman. Many triathlons feature cycling, running and swimming, but the Tri Tilghman is a little different – in true Eastern Shore fashion! The Tri Tilghman event swaps the swimming portion of a traditional triathlon for kayaking. Athletes must kayak 3 miles, bicycle 8.2 miles and then run a 5K before crossing the final finish line. For those that may not be comfortable with doing the full triathlon, registration is also accepted for individual events.
While at Phillips Wharf, be sure to visit the Environmental Center and Estuarium! Visitors are able to see aquariums filled with Chesapeake Bay critters and hold local turtles, frogs, crabs and oysters. The Environmental Center is open Thursday – Monday from 10am – 4pm.
Participate in the triathlon, compete in individual events, or just go to cheer on the competitors! We encourage all visitors to Tilghman Island on the morning of September 17th to drive carefully and be on the lookout for those competing. You can find out more information and register for the event at http://phillipswharf.org/event/tri-tilghman/.
Those looking to extend their weekend in Chesapeake country need to look no further than the Combsberry Inn, just 45 minutes from the event hub. Book a little weekend retreat at our waterfront Inn after the event to unwind.
